Mablethorpe Illuminations
Mablethorpe Illuminations Swith On: Sunday Evening, July 19, 2009 - Timmy Mallet lights up Mablethorpe.
MABLETHORPE is gearing up for a visit from whacky Timmy Mallet later this month, the celebrity turning on the resort’s famous summer illuminations.
With his crazy sense of humour and comedy mallet, Timmy is sure to be a big hit with local people and visitors on July 19, 2009, when he takes centre stage for an action packed evening of free entertainment.
Earlier in the year the District Council highlighted its want to work with the local businesses to give the illuminations a strong community feel and make it an even more popular event. As a result, the illuminations for 2009 organised by East Lindsey District Council will be supported by Sharky’s bar, which is helping to fund Timmy Mallet’s visit.
When Mallet was last in Mablethorpe at the official opening of Sharky’s he was mobbed by fans. Many still remember his chart busting number one hit ‘Yellow Bikini’, which it is hoped he will be singing at the switch-on.
On the switch-on evening from 8.45pm there will be a colourful procession through the town where the crowds flocking onto the streets will be able to welcome Timmy.
The procession will lead to the High Street Pullover, where from 7pm well-known Lincs FM presenter and compere for the evening, Eddie Shaw, will have been entertaining crowds with local bands in the run up to the star’s arrival on stage.
Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Councillor Adam Grist, is looking forward to the evening: “This is an exciting and important year for tourism in East Lindsey and it’s great to be working with local businesses to bring such a high profile and well-known star to our coast. I’m sure it will be an electrifying family evening that we can all enjoy. And best of all, it’s free of charge!”

Bathing Beauties Festival 2009
The UK's only Beach Hut Fesival - 18th, 19th and 20th September 2009
Cathy Watts will be taking part in the Bathing Beauties Festival 2009 and signing copies of her book over the weekend.
Festival goes from strength to strengthThis year’s festival of Bathing Beauties will be held over three days the 18th, 19th and 20th September instead of the usual two days as the festival starts to grow and take shape as the largest and longest linear coastal art festival in England. The festival will stretch from Mablethorpe with a performance space at Trusville and spread down to Sutton-on-Sea and Sandilands a distance of approximately five miles. A spectacular programme of events is being planned using the beach huts as mini art/craft galleries, exhibition spaces and the coastal landscape as the backdrop for performance, sculptural and installation art.This year the country’s leading authority on Beach Huts Dr Kathryn Ferry has chose the Festival to launch her new book ‘Sheds on the Beach’ Kathryn Ferry’s love of beach huts inspired her to travel around the coast researching their history and has led to appearances on radio and television, including the acclaimed BBC TV series ‘Coast’. Kathryn has a background in architectural history and worked for the Victorian Society after completing her PhD at Cambridge University. She sat on the judging committee for Bathing Beauties and is the author of Beach huts and bathing machines (Shire, Feb 2009) and Sheds on the Seashore: a tour through beach hut history (PenPress, June 2009). The latter book combines new historical research with the story of her two-month trip around the English coast between County Durham and the Bristol Channel. ‘I made my first visit to the Lincolnshire coast on that journey and the fantastic sandy beaches exceeded my expectations. The pagoda-type huts at Mablethorpe are completely unique and despite having seen some 20,000 huts they’re definitely my favourites.’ Kathryn is looking forward to taking part in this year’s Bathing Beauties festival and will be giving a talk about beach hut history as part of the weekend’s events.Bathing Beauties to launch her new book ‘Sheds on the Beach’ and will be doing talks and book signings during the festival The Mablethorpe Tourism Forum who run the event are keen to strengthen the literature and comedy content so any budding authors and poets would be welcomed at his and future events.
Graham Cullen chair of the Tourism Forum said ‘ Although we are gaining a reputation nationally as a premier art event the festival is also a community event so we are keen to encourage our local established or budding artists, authors, poets, actors etc to take part’.
Dancers of all genre are welcome take part in the Festival ‘Longest (linear) Promenade Dance’ in which we are looking to attract as many different dance groups and dance styles to help us dance our way over the five mile stretch of the festival adding to the spectacle and fun of the event .

New Town Centre Manager for Mablethorpe And Sutton on Sea.
At the recent Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea Chamber Of Trade (MASCOT) AGM, it was announced that there would be a new Town Centre Manager in place this Summer. Due the efforts of MASCOT and Brenda Turnbull Director of CAZ, the fulltime position was affirmed.
‘Our Communities need a virile Chamber of Trade,’ said John Handley, the re-elected chairman of MASCOT. Mr. Handley said how encouraged he was with the increase in membership and improved dialogue with local government authorities. ‘The strong management team has forged good relationships within the Community. This has enabled MASCOT to ‘come of age’ as the acknowledged voice of the businesses in both Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea.’
During the AGM, John Handley was the re-elected chairman, Debbie Sutcliffe as secretary; Chris Drew, Rob Manning, Dave Ives and David Carruthers were re-elected onto the managing committee. John Ostle was elected treasurer. Donna Sirett also joined the committee.
After the AGM, Dave Fenton gave an introduction the forthcoming ‘Mabo KO’ modelled on the 70’s ‘it’s a Knock Out’ competitions. Brenda Turnbull updated the members on Town Centre Manager post and the Town Centre Partnership. Graham Cullen, Chairman of the Mablethorpe Tourism Forum, reported on the Forum’s achievements and plans for the next 12 months. These include running a Craftmarket within the Bathing Beauties Festival planned for 8th, 19th and 20th September.
